The thesis in laymans terms basically involves the rejuvination and re-establishment of cultural awarness (event culture - not zulu or khoi-san as some idiots keep going on about) within the once rich cultural pricinct of Port Elizabeth. The site situated is at the knuckle of chapel and whites road, between the Public Library and Opera House. Yes i am demolishing the South African Revenue offices, and selling the marble slate cladding on the black market, (i give you best price).
Its stems from the updating of societal events within the area, whereas most of the activities within the area have not changed in the last 100years, society however has. Society is more Digitally tuned in today, and the task now is to insert something more relevant to the society of today.
Thus, the Mediatheque - or Digital Resource centre - as an associate of the library, updating the functionality of its service, whilst still providing to the other surrounding cultural buildings. The center MUST give to the fabric, symbiotically in synergy in order for the task to be successful, whilst at the same time challenging the introverted nature of computers and information sharing technologies. Architecture that is Interactive, informative to its users and the surrounding built environment.
