Thesii Hand 2006

Ok, so like heres some of what came out of the 2006 thesis class, just click to enlarge (you dont hear that one everyday). You can leave comments n shit, theres a registered login address for anonomous ppl somewhere either on this site or bobshotblog. But ya, was long n terrible, cant wait to do it again!!

SONIA TRINDADE - TRANSPORT INTERCHANGE
The focus was directed towards taxi movement and integration, SITE - Near the Russel Road highway interchange

CAROLINA FERREIRA - GALLERY

An extension to the art services available to the current museum, as well as the intergration of other activities such as a coffee shop, craft workshops etc... It worked to integrate The Grand Hotel that provided a backing to to the site. SITE - along Whites Road, at the King Edward Hotel Intersection.

JAMES (WALSINGER) MINCHENER - BUISNESS HOTEL

Hotel Jimbo comes complete with Gym n Showers for guests, as well as function rooms and a multitude of shopping and eating experiences. The Hotel worked to integrate the Old Post Office building creating a semi public courtyard. The hotels site worked to maintain close proximity to probable executive event zones such as the Feather Market Hall. SITE - The parking Lot in front of the Herald newspaper building, next to the Old Post Office.

NICHOLAS ' NICOO' SMITH - MARINA TRANSPORTI TERMINUS (Sea Port Terminal)

When he wasnt drinking, this is what he made. Well its pretty much just that, a harbour Passenger Terminal. It aims to aid and abet the current sea port developments that are underway. It also provides to the many possible tourists that may come around once PE can handle ships. SITE - by the sea.

LODEWYK COETZEE (Bakmaanikus Porkis) - De-S(t)igmatizing Death (a Promatorium)

This place cryogenically freezes your body using liquid nitrogen, then the body is vibrated until it resembles a powder. The chemicals used dry the cells, so that the body does not infact 'defrost' and become a pulp rather than powder. This new method of burial takes place in a Promatorium, and does not have a precident. The Promatorium is in a neighbourhood area, with close proximity to churches, and aids to inform and destigmatize. SITE - Trinder Square i think. correct me if im wrong here...

MARGOT 'Marg' SONNES - A Media and design School (correct me if im wrong Marg)

I cant quite remember, but had to do with a school for technology, and media orientated works i think. SITE - Same as Caro's. King Edward Intersection.

NEIL 'FAXWORTH PHILIP' CRANK - INNER CITY LIVING

Nil set out to re-introduce the residential component in the city. This in turn will aim to bring people back into the city and begin a catalytic process. The Apartments are designed to provide non redundant space and quality and increase the image of individuality, and the individual. SITE - Corner of Govan Mbeki, and Donkin Road.

BOB BHAGWANDAS - DIGITAL RESOURCE CENTER

My shitty ass thing was supposed to be an extension, in modern methods, to the library facilities, by appealing to the current society that we live in. It was to provide to the existing fabric, which i poorly did do, and 'upgrade it'. The idea there existed out of the recognition of the stale nature of old urban fabric that currently exists, beautiful as it may be, no one really uses it as much as it should be used. The hand in was Incomplete (as most are, tho one part of the design was built in an hour, its quite incomplete)

PRINCE hans TSOLO - A RURAL CLINIC

A clinic in a township to improve health facilities, as well as the addition to a larger picture. The area it is located in is currently under development to create main central hub containing all significant public services buildings. SITE - Central Motherwell.





















***THIRD PLACE***
GREG SNYMAN - CITY AS A PLAYGROUND
An intevention to provide for an active locale, and provide acitvity generating space. Not too sure what was going on here, but it worked as a more urban improving scheme i think. SITE - St Georges Park, Central, by Johns Cricket Stadium, on ring street.





















***SECOND PLACE***
ERIN ' MS MASIFUNDI ' GIBBS , aka THE BALL.
- FACILITATING DEMOCRATIC POLICING WITHIN THE CIVIC REALM
Its a Police station in the city. The project aimed to remove the stigma of typical 'fortified' police stations, and provide one that is very publically integrated and accessible and welcoming. SITE - the award winning site - accross from the new Post Office Building in central on Govan Mbeki.





















***FIRST PLACE AND COROBRICK WINNER***
AVI DAGAN (JAVI) - CITY AS CONVENTION CENTER
The immense site was to intergrate into the city effectively and provide for mass congresses and weddings and any other function in that nature. The project aimed to reinterpret the nature on convention centers and provide a more extroverted urban response, so people get to experiance the city. SITE - next to the highway, you cant miss it.
